The Third Dram wrote:The first pours off the top of a freshly broached bottle of Compass Box The Spice Tree... Immediately obvious that this one's a winner, with a beautifully toasted Cognac-like sheen from the oak input adding considerable character to the malt sweetness. Love it!

(A really tasty cola made with real sugar. It has a delightful spice to it.)

Re: Oats

Of course there is the High West Silver Western Oat whiskey. Almost all oats and barely aged. It gets very divergent reviews...some love it and some really don't. I finally succumbed to the intrigue and got it. I have only had one taste so far but I think I like...it IS very different.

Re: Scotch versus Whiskey and Bourbon

Thanks, Steffen. Good points!

I agree...I am slowing figuring things out as my palate becomes more exposed to Bourbon and rye. The Russell's Reserve 10 year old and the classic Jim Beam Rye ("lello" label) were my latest experiences...I liked them both.

Thanks Corbuso! I appreciate you taking the time to chime in.
Just last night I was reading about some of the wheat whiskies and I was intrigued.

I was sipping some Rittenhousen Rye B.I.B. Not exactly subtle, that!

Re: What did you drink last night?

As part of my on-going Rye kick, I tried Rittenhouse Rye B.I.B.
Oddly, the first, strongest element in the nose was...
wait for it...
Genoa Salami.
I kid you not. It slowly morphed into the usual dusty rye notes.

Re: Scotch versus Whiskey and Bourbon

The Eagles Rare was lovely. I have tried a few more Bourbons and quite a few ryes. My tasting has made it clear: I like ryes because there is a real spiciness and complexity. The High West ryes (Rendevous Rye in particular) are stunning. Perhaps others might benefit from my conclusion...if you are a...

Re: Scotch versus Whiskey and Bourbon

Thanks for your feedback Ganga! I think you have a good strategy and I will pursue it. In the meantime, I did enjoy the Bulleit Bourbon which made me think that perhaps I might like Rye whiskies. I next tried the Michter's Straight Rye which I enjoyed (oddly "thin" in body but excellent ta...

Scotch versus Whiskey and Bourbon

I very much enjoy Scotch single malts and also enjoy some blends. I have a fair bit of experience in the last 5 or 6 years and my enjoyment only becomes deeper and more intense with each new tasting. I rarely taste something I do not like. Having read quite a bit, I often see American whiskies and B...

Wow! I sure am interested in trying my unopened bottle after these reviews...especially yours, Novice Scotch Fan.

Do you think you had a spoiled bottle? The mushroom/preserved beets components sound to me like the bottle was 'corked.'
And what on earth is "bad smoke?"

Re: What did you drink last night?

Shieldaig 18. Only (?) available from Total wine. $40. There is only one review on-line (a blogger) and he hated it: 31/100! I thought the nose was extremely nice, very complex with fruits and flowers. The palate was almost as nice. The finish was decent. (The blogger HATED the finish--"bubbleg...

Re: Johnnie Walker Double Black

Actually, your point is excellent and cannot be overemphasized. I think many of us fail to realize how dynamic and changeable our tastes are, how much our palate develops, and how very small influences make huge impacts on our opinions. In the last 6 years I have been astounded how my whisky taste h...

Re: Johnnie Walker Double Black

Excellent observations, Ganga. Clearly, "Blue" is the pinnacle of over-priced blends. There is a large percentage of people that equate high cost with quality (or they simply want to impress their friends with their ability to afford "the best.") As a relative beginner (who has c...

Re: Johnnie Walker Double Black

I paid $39 US. And truly, I was being a bit sweeping in my statement, there are quite a few bottles that are reasonable. I think Walker products are all a bit over-priced. The Gold is a good example. I think it is delightful but wish it was about $10 less. I still have not tried the Black Bottle. I ...

Re: NEW MEMBERS - INTRODUCTION AREA

Hi everyone, I'm a whisky lover from Toronto, Canada. My dad and brother are whisky drinkers for many years but they always enjoyed the popular blends and really never ventured much into the world of single malts. About five years ago I started drinking more whisky than beer. I noticed that my pala...

The 10 FO is terrible. The rest of the range is just way over priced. There are better alternatives at substantially lower prices. The Fine Oak 10 is one of my favorites! I noticed on the "card" at the 'Big Box' beverage store that it had a very high rating from one of the majors...everyo...
