Re: Looking for

Peat has many characteristics in whisky, and smoke is one of them. But you probably mean smokey rather than medicinal. I would suggest Talisker.

Re: Bottle year of Talisker 25?

Check the bottling code. Tiny print hidden somewhere on the bottle. Probably near the mouth, under the metal capsule. It might have the year in it.

Why do you want to know this?

Next was the Bladnoch Samsara - I like to include new releases in order that those curious to try new drams but for whatever reason don't want to buy a bottle can see what's happening. I find the shift in style from Bladnoch of old to current really interesting - can anyone explain where the citrus...

Re: Whisky and Water ???

You can put water in whisky to water it down if the abv is too high for you. Or you can add a few drops to bring out the flavors.

Re: Particles in Mortlach

Use a coffee filter. It's probably not harmful, being in whisky, but it wouldn't be the best experience.

The whisky, the bottle being open for so long, probably isn't in the best condition. Probably has oxidized quite a bit.

Re: headache

Because it's crap alcohol.

Or were you looking for a more technical answer?

I'm not certain of its content. Is it whisky or flavored vodka? Alcohol produced in continuous stills have more of the nasty chemicals you don't get from pot-distilled whisky.

I take it that when you delete your account, you're allowed to delete all your posts and comments? That's unfortunate. He and many others have given a lot of good info to the forum.

Re: On consistency... brands, bottles, vendors, countries...

Is it normal for a blended Scotch to vary from smokey to not at all smokey? Brands like to keep their product consistent, but that's not always easy. Each vatting, or batch, can vary a bit. It requires a big organization with the ability to set aside the component whiskies that result in the proper...

Re: "Old" bottle of Ballantine's???

Check some whisky auction sites, and see if anything like that is offered. That might give you an idea of the monetary value. I suspect that the monetary value of a common brand like Ballantine's is higher than the flavor value. That is, the collectors would value it higher than drinkers, and this d...

Re: Whiskey distilleries tour plans needed

Malt Madness is pretty complete, if not entirely up to date. They include grain distilleries. They list a few silent stills. They don't have many of the newest distilleries. You'll have to do further research to find those. Or come up with an excuse to limit yourself, like to only distilleries which...

Re: Cragganmore 12 notably changed when 1/3 full

I'm sorry for your loss. It doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. Light can cause a problem, as well as high or varying temperatures. Air is what causes the oxidation, so having the bottle shaken up (while partly empty), or leaving the cork off could have caused that. I'll assume you didn't for...

It's in production now, so it's not worth anything yet. Once it's no longer available, you'll have to find someone who was a fan. That is, if there's no equivalent replacement on the market. I would assume Diageo will continue to supply the market with Auchroisk of about that age. Unless they're dis...

When I drink whisky neat, I don't like it chilled.

When I drink bourbon sour on the rocks, I like the ice to cut the sweetness as it melts.

I like the Talisker Dark Storm, but that's peaty, so you might not. And you can only get it at Travel retail. The Johnnie Gold actually looks like a good price (and I like that one). Maybe the Dalmore's. Not a bad price for a liter. Other than that, nothing on that list looks special or inexpensive.

I just happened to think of The Dalmore. It's very sherried, and well made. It's not everyone's cup of tea because it can be overly sweet, but it might be worth a try.

One of the new "color" Macallans should match the 12, shouldn't it? Can you order from the US, online? I'm pretty sure the 12 is still on the market here. I kinda hate to say it, but I don't think there's a good match for Macallan. Especially if he doesn't even like any other Macallans. No...
