Re: Bourbon

pkt has great suggestions, I just want to add Black Maple Hill to the list. It is a great value for the quality. Black Maple Hill is not a distillery. There is some variation to these and you need to have someone specify the specifics when disgussing it. As simply a response to a recommendation for...

The Girvan is esoteric, amazing, and delicious. I'd be curious to hear what you think of it. That was actually my favorite of the Sovereign barrels K&L brought in.

Re: What Whisky Industry Practice should be outlawed?

Point taken on trusting people in the industry, but I still think there are a number of distillers producing high quality expressions who use coloring without the goal of noticeably altering the flavor. And I openly acknowledge that there are many who use it for flavoring. In contrast, products such...

Re: What Whisky Industry Practice should be outlawed?

I've listened to a few interviews of distillers discussing the addition of color, and it seems that such a miniscule amount (hundredth to thousandth of a percentage per gallon) is added in the majority of cases that it has no effect on flavor. It is simply to provide continuity of color between bott...

Re: What's your latest bottle opened?

Why do I feel like everyone is killing but not opening? Glenfiddich 15. Tis a rather underappreciated beverage. I'm in a holding pattern where all my bottles are half full. I usually keep something open from each style of whisky (Bourbon, rye, peated, sherried, etc), and am waiting to kill things b...

Re: Wild Turkey 101 8 Year Old

what's your stand on age difference in Bourbons? I came across a 16 year old Black Maple Hill, it costs about 90$ more than the "Small Batch" one. and I'm wondering if it's worth it. I find that with Single Malt's the correlation between the age and the price is just (in most cases). But ...

Re: Wild Turkey 101 8 Year Old

I tasted a very nice Bourbon Called Black Maple Hill a while back. It's one of those Small distilleries in the heart of America. I appreciate your comment and question, this is relevant to what many people wrestle with about which companies to support with their whisk(e)y purchases. Black Maple Hil...

I agree with Springbank if it is within your budget. The 10 year, 10 year 100 proof, any of the Sherry 14 year bottlings if available which can provide the opportunity to look at spirit from varying sherry casks, 15 year, and 18 year. If this ends up costing too much, since the Springbanks can get p...

Re: Laphraoig 40 Year Old

I'd say if you have the cash, and it doesn't seem too painful to spend that much on any one bottle, it would definitely be worth it. Or you can purchase the bottle and wait for a little bit while you decide, and then sell it for a fair amount more if you choose not to keep it.

Roger, I agree, John Glaser was actually the person I had in mind when I posted the topic. Re: 40% ABV vs. 43% ABV

I agree with Adam regarding the second question. In response to the first one, I think it ultimately depends on the producer and the type of product they're hoping to introduce in to the marketplace. 40% has been a standard for many expressions for a long time, but a shift has occurred where distill...

With all of the new corporate developments, microdistilleries, and innovative expressions in the past decade, Who do people think was the most influential person in the Whisky world in that time?

This is not necessarily limited to Scotland either.

If you end up collecting with the goal of consumption, I know many people find doing some blind tasting to be particularly useful and informative. If you do a blind tasting and discover that you enjoy a $30 bottle more than, or as much as, a $150 bottle, then you've learned something that will save ...
